A MESSAGE FROM THE
 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CATERING EXECUTIVES

CHECK BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

There are two things that an informed consumer must check before choosing a caterer: the presence of a license and insurance.  The use of any unlicensed or underinsured caterer can cause you to be liable for damages if a guest is poisoned or injured at your event.

A licensed caterer’s facilities are subject to inspection by local health authorities at any time.  These caterers have a strict set of regulations that govern them, and to which they must adhere, if they want to continue to do business.  An unlicensed caterer, on the other hand, is not subject to health inspections and does not have to follow health department regulations.

What difference does this licensing make?  It means that food coming from a licensed caterer was prepared in the most sanitary conditions enforceable by law.  Food from an unlicensed caterer could be coming from extremely unsanitary conditions.

Insurance is another area to check.  A licensed caterer always carries insurance while an unlicensed caterer usually has no insurance.  If you use an unlicensed caterer, and one or more of your guests become seriously ill as a result of the food, you are liable.

Check these important factors before choosing an unlicensed caterer.  This bit of detective work could save you more than the price of the food.

Sincerely,
